St. Nicholas Abbey Rum has been awarded the Gold Medal for Premium Rum at the 2009 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition.

About St. Nicholas Abbey Rum:

St. Nicholas Abbey has a long tradition of producing rum, a spirit Barbados has claim on discovering in the 17th century, when plantation workers began experimenting with fermenting molasses into alcohol. Initial batches were not known for their quality; in fact early Barbadian rum was referred to as ‘Kill-Divil…a hot, hellish, and terrible liquor.’ Over time, distillation practices significantly improved and Barbadian rum became renowned in both Europe and Colonial America.

One of just four distilleries in Barbados, the Plantation has shunned mass production and complex mechanical systems in favour of the traditional distillation process that made Barbadian rum famous over 350 years ago.

The Plantation cultivates and harvests by hand a select variety of sugar cane unique to St. Nicholas Abbey.  Organic methods are utilised on the plantation; pesticides are not utilised in the production of our sugar cane.

The freshly cut cane is hand-fed into the steam mill where it is crushed just once to extract the sweetest juice possible. Within minutes, the juice is fed directly into the fermentation pots to ensure premium freshness and quality.

The spirit is barreled in the finest bourbon oak casks and aged to perfection in the plantation’s own rum bond. St. Nicholas’ highland location benefits from cooling tradewind breezes that further aid in the ageing and maturation of the rum.  Continued attention throughout the ageing process sets St. Nicholas Abbey Rum apart from others, establishing it as a premium brand in its class. The result is genuine, unblended liquor best enjoyed straight, with a smooth taste and a lively, sharp finish.

About the Competition:

While there are other respected tasting competitions in the US and Europe, this is an opportunity for Sugar Cane Spirits to be judged on their own merit and in classes recognised by the Sugar Cane Spirits industry.

  Sugar Cane Spirits were judged for their aroma, initial taste, body and finish on a scale of 1 - 25 for each attribute.   Judges then added their scores for these attributes and gave a final rating which was used to calculate awards.

In order to limit palate fatigue the tasting competition is divided into four sessions with one break during each session.  During the breaks the judges are encouraged to discuss anything other than the spirits they are tasting during that session.  At least 20 judges at each tasting session ensures that no one or two judges can influence the results and that each spirit is judged on its own merit.

None of the judges are compensated for their travel or accommodation expenses during the competition. There are no corporate sponsors for this competition. Edward Hamilton and the Ministry of Rum are solely responsible for the competition and the results.
